Military hotels are very popular in the South, especially in Tamil Nadu. The term 'Military Hotel' gained popularity around the Second World War when the city had a large number of military troops. Such hotels catered to this large population serving home-style non-vegetarian cuisine as their patrons got used to the non-veg food when on duty. Kumaravel Chettinad Mess in Teynampet, Chennai, is one of the few military hotels serving typical non-veg Chettinad cuisine. The specials on the menu consist of Chicken Chettinad, Chicken Podimas, Mutton Chukka (must-have) and Biryani with onion raita and a bowl of Chicken Curry. True to the Chettinad tag, the gravies are prepared with aromatic spices. A perfect place to get a quick home-style meal, especially if you're a non-vegetarian!
