A trip to Chennai is never complete if you have not dropped into Mylai Karpagambal Mess. It was started by Mr R. Soundararajan in the year 1950 and later carried on by his son S. Prabhu Das. Back in the day, Das' father used to procure vegetables from the market and serve customers personally. In 1989, a variety of rice dishes were introduced to serve the customers who came after lunch. Along with Aloo Podimas, Beans Usili, Avial and Pineapple Rasam, Das and his wife introduced varieties like Nellikai Podi, Kalyana Gotsu, Kasi and Wheat halwas. He maintains the taste with the recipes that were hand-me-down rituals of the family's ladies.
